Teachers of Tradition: NCs Folk Heritage Award-Winning Potters, a temporary exhibition highlighting and honoring the exemplary work of thirteen of the states outstanding traditional potters.
First presented in 1989 by the North Carolina Arts Council, the Folk Heritage Award recognizes the states outstanding traditional artists for their lifetime achievements and their dedication to the preservation of those crafts not only through their own work, but also through passing those traditions along.
Past Folk Heritage Award potter recipients include Dorothy and Walter Auman, Burlon Craig, Vernon Owens, Amanda Swimmer, Nell Cole Graves, Louise Bigmeat Maney, Melvin Lee Owens, Celia Cole Perkinson, Neolia Cole Womack, Senora Lynch. Arnold Richardson and Sid Luck are receiving the award this year, on May 20, 2014, at the A.J. Fletcher Opera House in the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. Examples of all of these potters work will be on display at the center as part of the exhibition.
The North Carolina Pottery Center wishes to thank the North Carolina Arts Council Folklife Program for the use of images and texts relating to award winners
